Hillary Clinton is in on the joke.
The American politician has mocked U.S. President Donald Trump with a parody letter imagining a correspondence between U.S. and Soviet leaders during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Clinton’s spoof pokes fun at a letter that Trump had sent to Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier this month after announcing the withdrawal of U.S. troops from northern Syria. "Don't be a fool!" Trump wrote. Erdogan reportedly threw the letter in the trash and proceeded with launching his country’s offensive into Syria.
Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel teased Trump’s letter last week by comparing it to an imaginary missive from President John F. Kennedy to Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.
“Don’t be a d**k ok? Get your missiles out of Cuba,” reads Kennedy’s fake letter dated Oct. 16, 1962. “Everybody will say ‘Yay! Khrushchev! You’re the best!”
“But if you don’t everybody will be like ‘what an a-hole’ and call your garbage country ‘The Soviet Bunion’,” the mock letter went on. (The real Khrushchev had agreed to remove Soviet missiles from Cuba this week in 1962)
Trump’s real-life letter contained a similar sentiment: “History will look upon you favorably if you get this done the right and humane way. It will look upon you forever as the devil if good things don’t happen. Don’t be a tough guy. Don’t be a fool!”
Former State Secretary Clinton tweeted a screenshot of the fake letter Sunday, captioning it with the phrase “Found in the archives...”
Around 200,000 people “liked” Clinton’s tweet trolling Trump and 40,000 retweeted it at the time of publication.
The Kremlin called the language of Trump’s letter “highly unusual” last week. Erdogan told reporters he would respond to the letter “when the time comes.”
