First Manezh Verdict

A 25-year-old Muscovite got a six-month suspended sentence Thursday in the first trial over the violent nationalist riots on Manezh Square in downtown Moscow in December, Interfax said.

Vladislav Khakhanov was convicted of beating up an unidentified 35-year-old man of "non-Slavic appearance" on the metro during the riots. It remained unclear whether he plans to appeal.

A mixed crowd of 5,500 football fans and ultranationalists clashed with police on Manezh Square and neighboring areas during an unsanctioned rally. The participants protested what they said was an attempt to hush up the murder of a football fan by North Caucasus natives.
