Thirty-four years ago today, on Jan. 14, 1980, the UN voted against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, requesting the "immediate, unconditional and total withdrawal of foreign troops" from the country. The resolution was ignored by the Soviet Union, and the conflict continued until 1989.
