Two Big Jets Land With Flaws

A British Airways airliner has made a safe emergency landing at a Siberian airport after its navigation system malfunctioned, airport officials said.

En route from London to Beijing, the Boeing 747-400 jumbo jet carried 270 people on the flight, Interfax reported.

The passengers resumed the journey today, about a day after the touchdown in Irkutsk, onboard a replacement Boeing sent by the British Airways, the airport said in a statement. They spent the night in two downtown hotels.

The airline also dispatched engineers to examine the aircraft that came offline.

In another flight that may have made travelers jittery, an Airbus-321 made a safe emergency landing at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport earlier today. The jet, which carried 219 passengers returning from a vacation in Turkey, had a breakdown in a landing gear leg, police said.

An investigation is underway. Police didn't name the airline that operates the aircraft.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
