Two Russian warships arrived in Syria on Sunday, news agencies reported, a visit that will likely be seen as a show of force and a display of support for President Bashar Assad's government.

Five ships, including aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and destroyer Admiral Chabanenko, put in at Russia's naval maintenance and supply facility in the Syrian port of Tartus, Interfax said.

The ships were to be on their way on Monday, a Navy spokesman was cited by the news agency as saying. Earlier reports said the vessels, part of a group of Russian ships currently in the Mediterranean, were expected to spend several days at the Tartus facility, one of the Russian Navy's few outposts abroad.

The stop is nominally billed as a "business visit," but Syrian news agency SANA cited an unnamed Russian officer in Tartus as saying the visit was to strengthen ties between Moscow and Damascus.

Russia has maintained support for the increasingly isolated Assad during a nearly 10-month-long uprising against his rule. The United Nations estimates the government crackdown has killed more than 5,000 people.

Russia joined China in October in blocking passage of a Western-crafted U.N. Security Council resolution that would have condemned Assad's government for the crackdown, saying Assad's militant opponents share the blame.

Syria has been a major recipient of Russian weapons, accounting for 7 percent of Russia's total of $10 billion in arms deliveries abroad in 2010, according to the Moscow think tank CAST.

Russian media had reported in November that the Admiral Kuznetsov would call at Tartus.

This just goes to show, Russian Government have no feeling for human life, killing 5000 of your own, can Russia not remember Stilen , its coming back to that. But weapon sales are more important then democery or human life. I fell sorry for the Russian people . I am an American and we have out bad faults , but we don't slaughter thousands of our own.

John Obama

"but we don't slaughter thousands of our own." What are you on about you country almost exterminated the native american population by killing million of them so you could expand your territories, if that wasnt enough remember the civil war where your people began killing each other and murdering innocent civillians and even if your country doesnt kill thousands of its own people it does go to other countries and kill thousands of theirs. if any government doesnt have feelings for human life its yours so dont go preaching around here about whos bad and whos good.

I still wish Russia and the USA would go to war and get this power crap over with once and for all. if Russia wins I learn to speak Russian.

Michael Garrood

Amazing. What a lousy choice of friends Russia has. The only criterion that counts: the friend should be against the west...

Mr Obama if you will bother to read my article you will see I said WE have our bad faults, and if you read your history books you will see we are only a few hundred years old, all the killing you are talking about took place when we were in our beginnings of a nation. also if you read your history we didn't get involved in the second world war even though our allies wanted us to , only when we were attacked did we get in the war .if we had not gone to other countries and killed thousands, you and most of the world would be speaking German or Japanese right now. going to Irag, you attack the US as happen on 9-11 you damn right we will go to other countries and kill thousands, but we do not mow down thousands of our own people in the streets.or gas thousands of our people. we don't have a dictator or run by religious nerds, we have at least a working democracy that most countries would like to have. yes we had our civil war , we took this country away from the native people, but who are we ?? Russians, Germans, french, Japanese. on and on mix it together we are Americans. we grew from 13 to 50 states and from a few hundred thousand to three plus hundred million.and sense the civil we as Americans are civilized and don't go around cutting heads off or burning people at the stake, again I suggest you read your history books and read you up to date news, you may learn more then you think you know.

FBR

oh mr Obama, and why did Russia go into Afganistan and kill thousands for 7 years ,do you have an answer for that ?I am only assuming you are Russian, the way you took my message.

FBR

Mr Obama I am not finished with you yet, now also study you news past and present. The US is first or if not first a close second in going to other countries and helping thousands , following a disaster , we send supplies, doctors . rescue workers, medicine , not guns sir.

For the love all that is good, Why can't the United States, UK, Iran, Russian Confederation, and China Adhere to the guidence set fouth by the TEHRAN CONFERENCE. Are we so naive to imagine that our predicesors didn't forsee our current problems. But much more they agreed upon a roadmap towards world peace then. Consicrated by the sworld of Stalingrad the ideas of global co-operation in order to advert another world war was galvanized then. I call for a second Tehran Confernce to reignite the tourch of mankind's compassion. While there maybe our world leaders could agree on some little things like a global infrastructue master plan, or say devise a plan to provide fresh water, shelter and power for 20 billion instead of building a better bullet.
