St. Petersburg on Thursday commemorated the Soviet defense of the city from the Nazis in World War II with a military display.
Fifty Soviet-era tanks were brought onto Palace Square, including the KV-1, T-34 and T-38 models, the state-run RIA Novosti news agency reports.
More than a million people died of hunger, cold and disease in Leningrad, as St. Petersburg was known during the Soviet period, between 1941, when Nazi troops encircled the city, and the lifting of the siege on Aug. 9, 1944.
