Russian Politician Mironov Promises Rap Battle Debates

Russian politician Sergey Mironov has promised voters a series of pre-election rap battle debates ahead of next month's State Duma elections.

Sixty-three-year-old Mironov, who leads the political party A Just Russia, will take on the leaders of Russia’s main political parties in a series of “debattles,” his party’s press office  announced.

The Kremlin has so far neither confirmed nor denied the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mironov will perform under the pseudonym OxxxyMironov, alluding to one of the most high-profile names in Russian rap Miron Fyodorov. Fyodorov has performed under the name  OxxxyMiron since the mid 2000s.

The rap debates will adhere to the same rules as many popular rap battles viewed online, challenging politicians to rhythmically rhyme whilst promoting their election manifestos.

The weekly debattles will be broadcast on YouTube starting on Aug. 5, with the winner decided by a public vote.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
