Rescue Close For Ship Trapped In Antarctica, Report Says

A Russian ship that has been trapped in the Antarctic for days is close to being rescued with an icebreaker having managed to come within 20 kilometers of the vessel in distress, a report said.

The Chinese icebreaker "Snow Dragon" now has to face the challenge of getting through kilometers of dense pack ice to get to the "Akademik Shokalsky", the Russian vessel that has been trapped in the Antarctic since Christmas Eve.

The vessel carries seventy-four passengers who are part of a research expedition to Antarctica, including scientists, tourists and crew members, AP reported Friday.
