Russia Opens Case Against Football Fans' Attackers

Prosecutors in southern Russia have opened a criminal case over a street fight involving Swiss fans of the FC St. Gallen football team, the local prosecutor's office have said.

A fight involving some 15 people broke out early on the morning of Nov. 29 on the main street of Krasnodar, a local law enforcement source told RIA Novosti. Seven offenders were arrested, nearly all of them drunk.

The day before the incident, FC Kuban defeated FC St. Gallen 4-0 in a Group A match in the UEFA Europa League.

The night after the match, unidentified individuals "used a minor excuse to cause physical harm to three St. Gallen fans," the prosecutor's office said.

Physical assault is punishable in Russia by up to two years in prison. The suspects have not been identified.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
