Seventy-two years ago today, on Aug. 22, 1941, Decree No. 562 passed into law, declaring that all soldiers serving on the front-line were to be given 100 grams of vodka a day as part of their basic rations. Distribution of the 40 percent proof vodka was directed by Politburo member Anastas Mikoyan and remained in place until victory was achieved in 1945.
