Weapons Sales to be Limited During Sochi Games

The sale of air guns and explosive materials will be limited during the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev said Thursday.

In a meeting with the U.S. State Department's diplomatic security bureau the minister said that over 30,000 police and interior troops will be providing security during the Games.

"In order to provide security during the Olympics implementation of limitations on the sale of weapons, ammunition, special equipment as well as explosive and poisonous materials is planned," Kolokoltsev said.

As part of their training, staff will also be given phrase books to help them provide necessary assistance to athletes, spectators and volunteers, Interfax reported.

He said special forms in English, German, French and Japanese have already been supplied to police stations in Sochi and other Russian cities to make it easier for foreign tourists to communicate with the police should they fall victim to crime.

In the course of his official visit to the U.S. Kolokoltsev will hold several meeting with representatives of U.S. security agencies, the report said.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
