Billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov threw his support Tuesday behind former Yabloko member Igor Belousov as the next mayor of Khimki.
Prokhorov, who has kept a low political profile since running for president against Vladimir Putin in March, said on his blog that his new political party,
Civic Platform, believed Belousov, who represents the newly formed Novaya Rossia party, would act independently and professionally in the city north of Moscow.
Sixteen candidates have registered for the Oct. 14 election, including acting Mayor Oleg Shakhov, who is backed by United Russia, and environmentalist and opposition leader Yevgenia Chirikova, who is backed by Yabloko.
