The wife of Investigative Committee chief Alexander Bastrykin owned an apartment on Spain's Costa Blanca from 2007 to 2011, but Bastrykin did not declare the property, Novaya Gazeta reported.
During that time period, Bastrykin was head of the General Prosecutor's Office's Investigative Committee and then of the newly formed Investigative Committee of Russia.
Under transparency rules introduced by former President Dmitry Medvedev, senior government officials must declare their property holdings and those of immediate relatives.
The newspaper cited as evidence a letter from 2008 in which the Spanish tax authorities remind Olga Alexandrova to pay the municipality where the apartment was located 193 euros ($250) before Jan. 29, 2009. The state property registry of Spain also confirms Alexandrova's ownership of the property.
The apartment measures 80 square meters and is worth approximately 80,000 to 150,000 euros. In August 2011, the property changed ownership. The new owners are Lyudmila and Gennady Varakin.
Alexandrova declined to comment on the matter. The Investigative Committee said that currently neither Bastrykin nor his wife owns property in Spain.

A Message from The Moscow Times:
Dear readers,
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."
These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.
We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.
