Rosatom has begun an overseas spending spree in an effort to close a 20-year lag in high-temperature superconductors, Kommersant reported Tuesday.
The state nuclear monopoly has bought technology for the production of high-temperature superconductors from Germany's Bruker HTS. Bruker will deliver and assemble equipment at Rosatom's Kurchatovsky Institute, where it will form part of a pilot project, the newspaper reported.
Rosatom would not reveal how much the contract is worth, but said it was cheaper than developing the technology from scratch. The bulk of the contract is likely to be paid for out of about 3 billion rubles ($100 million) earmarked for Rosatom under a federal modernization program.
