Pilot Error in Igarka Crash

Pilot error in unfavorable weather conditions caused an August plane crash that killed 12 people in the Krasnoyarsk region town of Igarka, crash investigators said Thursday.

The An-24 plane hit trees and rammed into the ground after the pilots brought in the aircraft too low despite not being able to see the landing lights because of thick fog, the Interstate Aviation Committee said, adding that the crew received incorrect information about weather in the area, Interfax reported.

Of the 15 people aboard, only three, all pilots, survived the crash. Investigators said earlier that they might be jailed for up to seven years on charges of violating air traffic safety rules.
