Five sailors died and six others were missing Sunday after a tugboat sank while trying to rescue another ship in the Arctic Laptev Sea, RIA-Novosti reported.
Three of the tugboat’s 14 crew members were rescued and brought to the Tiksi port in the Sakha republic on Sunday.
The Alexei Kulakovsky tugboat was supposed to tow the TB-0012 ship, which sent out a distress call about 37 kilometers north of Tiksi on Thursday, but it sank early Friday for unclear reasons in the vicinity of the other vessel, said a representative of the Sakha company that owned the tugboat.
