Russian Prosecutor General to Investigate Reported Election Violations

Denis Abramov / Vedomosti

Russia's Central Election Commission (CEC) has filed a request with the Russian Prosecutor General's Office, asking that they investigate early voting in the Barvikha municipal elections following multiple complaints of violations, the Interfax news agency reported Tuesday.

"All the materials were compiled and sent to the Prosecutor General," the CEC representative told Interfax, adding that the Prosecutor General's Office promised to consider the complaints as quickly as possible.

CEC chairperson Ella Pamfilova said she will meet with election participants if a direct appeal is made to the commission, according to the CEC website.

Early voting requires immediate and full verification by law enforcement officials, given Barvikha's small population, the CEC press service said, Interfax reported.

The Barvikha municipal election is scheduled for April 24. Nearly 100 candidates registered in the election, including members of Alexei Navalny's opposition party, the RBC news agency reported.
