Hundreds Gather in Moscow for Anti-Fascist Rally (Photo Essay)

Several hundred demonstrators on Sunday held an anti-fascist march in central Moscow in honor of journalist Anastasia Baburova and human rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov, both of whom died in 2009.

The Moscow Times photographer Pascal Dumont attended and took photographs of the march.

About 400 people participated in the event, Dozhd television reported, citing police estimates.

Markelov, a lawyer in several high profile cases, and Baburova, a 25-year-old journalism student at Moscow State University who worked for Novaya Gazeta, were shot and killed on Jan. 19, 2009.

The murder was believed to be linked to Markelov's anti-fascist activities.

Two members of an ultra-right nationalist group were later convicted of the murder and are now serving terms of 18 years and life imprisonment.

The march passed off without any disturbances, though two demonstrators told Dozhd that they were beaten up while making their way home.
