Moscow Airports Strengthen Security After Bombings in Brussels

Moscow airports have strengthened security measures in connection with a series of deadly terrorist attacks in Brussels, the Interfax news agency reported Tuesday, citing a source within the emergency services.

The security services of Moscow's Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo and Domodedovo Airports operate in emergency mode. Thorough inspections of both passengers and luggage at airport entrances and in the sterile area are being carried out, the source told the news agency.

Russian Transport Minister Maksim Sokolov had said earlier on Tuesday that security checks would be carried out in Russian airports following the terrorist bombings in the Belgian capital, Interfax reported.

Two explosions rocked the Brussels airport this morning, killing at least 10 people and leaving another several dozen injured, according to international media. The attacks were carried out by a suicide bomber, Reuters reported, citing Belgian broadcaster VRT.

After the initial airport attacks, explosions occurred at several metro stations in Brussels.

Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the attacks in Brussels and sent condolences to King Philippe of Belgium in connection with the death of innocent civilians in the series of explosions.

Putin said that “this barbaric crime, which cannot be justified,” confirms once again that terrorism knows no boundaries and threatens the peoples of the whole world.

“Fighting this evil requires the most active international cooperation,” Putin was quoted as saying in the statement, published on the Kremlin’s official website.
