Death of Russian Athlete Nikolai Khrenkov a 'Great Loss'

Nikolai Khrenkov, who was killed in a car crash, was a two-time silver medalist at the Bobsleigh and Skeleton European Championship.

Olympic bobsledder Nikolai Khrenkov was killed in a car crash in the Krasnoyarsk region on Monday.

Khrenkov, 29, was traveling from Krasnoyarsk to Zheleznogorsk to visit his parents when his Honda Accord was involved in a head-on collision with another car, the regional government said on its website.

The driver of the second vehicle was also killed in the accident, the statement added.

“Nikolai [Khrenkov] was a real professional and a great athlete,” Alexei Voyevoda, his teammate on the Russian national bobsleigh team, told The Moscow Times on Monday. “He didn’t fear death. He lived life at its fullest, enjoying every moment. His death is a great loss.”

Russia's Sports Ministry also released a statement on its website, offering its condolences to Khrenkov's friends and relatives.

Khrenkov was a two-time silver medalist at the Bobsleigh and Skeleton European Championship and took part in the four-man bobsleigh event at the Sochi Olympic Games.
