Russian Olympic medalist Alexander Zubkov has been hospitalized after attackers armed with baseball bats smashed the car he received as an award for winning gold in Sochi, a news report said.
Bobsledder Alexander Zubkov, a two-time gold medalist at the Sochi Winter Olympics, told news agency Itar-Tass on Friday he was hospitalized with an injury to his wrist and additional small wounds after a run-in with unidentified assailants in the courtyard of his home in Moscow.
Zubkov said attackers smashed the windshield and headlights of Zubkov's Mercedes Benz — part of the reward given to Russian Olympic medalists by the Russian government after the Sochi Games held earlier this year — Itar-Tass reported.
The athlete said he tried to intervene and got into a fight with the attackers, fearing for his small child who was also present during the incident, Itar-Tass reported.
The Russian Bobsled Federation has appealed to any witnesses to come forward, the report said.
