Lecturer Fined 2.4M Rubles for Taking 2,000-Ruble Bribe

A court in Vladivostok has saddled a lecturer from the Far Eastern Federal University with a hefty fine for accepting a bribe from a student suspected of cheating on her diploma paper, prosecutors in the Primorye region said.

The court handed down a 2.4-million ruble ($74,000) fine and banned him from holding administrative positions in teaching institutions for three years, the regional prosecutor's office said, Interfax reported Monday.

The lecturer was a member of the university's certification panel and simultaneously acted as a supervisor for the student. He received an initial 30,000-ruble bribe for turning a blind eye to evidence that the student had cheated on her diploma paper.

He also gave the student a positive job reference and gave his written approval for her paper to be considered by the certification panel.

The lecturer was detained by Federal Security Service officials while receiving a further 30,000 rubles of the bribe.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
