A polar expedition set sail from Kronstadt in the hope of finding a mysterious land called Sannikov 113 years ago today, on July 5, 1900. While the ship's commander would claim to have located the island, Soviet pilots later disproved its existence — leading to suggestions that the land was actually formed from ice and had since melted away.
