CHICAGO — Russia is halting purchase of the meat from two Smithfield Foods plants, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Thursday.
Russia is blocking meat shipments from Smithfield’s plant in Tar Heel, North Carolina, the world’s largest pork-processing facility, and a plant in Clinton, North Carolina, as of Aug. 2, the USDA said.
The ban was imposed after violations of “sanitary and veterinary requirements of the Russian Federation,” the Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Inspection Service said in a statement on its web site.
