Symskaya Into Siberia

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah () -- Equity Oil Co. said Monday that the Russian government had authorized oil and gas exploration by its 50 percent-owned subsidiary, Symskaya Exploration Inc., in Siberia.

Symskaya was formed in 1992 by Equity and Leucadia National Corp. to explore for and develop oil and gas on 440,000 hectares in the Krasnoyarsk region of eastern Siberia.

Utah-based Equity said it expected to begin drilling its first exploratory well during the first week of October.

Equity said Symskaya had activated its drilling contract with Yeniseyneftegasgeologia, which would act as drilling contractor in the first well, the Lemok No. 1, in the Symskaya area of Krasnoyarsk.

Supplemental Western drilling equipment provided by Symskaya Exploration is now in Russia and is being shipped to the drilling site.

Equity has operations in nine western states and Canada.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
