Teimuraz Zhorzholiani, who leads the Monarchist Party, called off his hunger strike after Shevardnadze agreed to participate in the political debates.
Zhorzholiani accused Shevardnadze of losing the breakaway region of Abkhazia, blamed Shevardnadze for economic ills and called for his resignation.
Shevardnadze said he was willing to resign, if the Georgian people insisted.
"I have repeatedly offered to resign. But neither parliament nor the Georgian people has accepted my resignation," he said.
