Gold Miners Strike

JOHANNESBURG () -- Fearing continued violence, 6,000 workers failed to return to work Monday at a gold mine near Johannesburg after weekend battles killed 12 and injured more than 80.


The miners, about two-thirds of the total work force at the Vaal Reef gold mine, want politically aligned security guards suspended and employees to be barred from bringing weapons to work. They said they would refuse to return to work until their safety is guaranteed.
