The lawyer for Adrian and Bernadette Mooney said she was shocked by the severity of the sentences, adding that she had lodged an appeal and applied for the pair to be released on bail.
The couple were given two years for trying to smuggle the baby plus two years, four months for buying her. They had paid $6,000 to middlemen to arrange the adoption.
