U.S. Joins Exercise

KIEV () -- Two ships from the U.S. Sixth Fleet joined Russian patrol boats Thursday at the start of an eight-nation naval exercise in the Black Sea.


Code named "Maritime Partner 94," the six-day U.S.-sponsored operation will include surface-to-surface gunnery training, helicopter maneuvers and search-and-rescue exercises.


The operation was designed to foster closer ties between the United States and emerging democracies in the region.
