MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay () -- The opposition Colorado Party took the lead in Uruguay's presidential race early Monday and its chief candidate, former President Julio Sanguinetti, claimed victory.
The Interior Ministry said, on the basis of 85 percent of the returns, that the Colorado Party had 586,392 of the votes cast Sunday, to the National Party's 566,622 votes and 554,206 for the leftist Progressive Encounter. Sanguinetti, who was president from 1985 to 1990, claimed victory.
Analysts had predicted the voting would be the closest in Uruguay's recent history.
