This was the third year in a row that the Assembly endorsed such a resolution, but the margin this time was the most lopsided yet.
Although the U.S. embargo has been in force against Cuban President Fidel Castro's government for more than 30 years, opposition was spurred by a 1992 law aimed at speeding a transition to democracy in Cuba after the demise of the Soviet Union. The law makes foreign-based subsidiaries of U.S. firms that had hitherto been able to trade with Cuba liable to prosecution and bars ships from visiting U.S. ports for six months after sailing from Cuba.
