ANKARA, Turkey -- President Suleyman Demirel said Monday that the extension of a natural gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to Europe through Turkey and Iran was a crucial project for his country. "Turkey needs the gas. We favor its construction as soon as possible," Demirel said during a meeting with the Turkmenistan president, Saparmurad Niyazov. Demirel said he would travel to Iran in July to discuss the project with the Iranian president, Hashemi Rafsanjani.
