Suspended Sentence in Alexeyeva Assault

A young man who struck veteran rights activist Lyudmila Alexeyeva, 82, on the head in March was handed a one-year suspended sentence Wednesday.

The Khamovnichesky District Court convicted Konstantin Pereverzev, who hit Alexeyeva at the Park Kultury metro station during commemorations for victims of the March 29 suicide bombings, of hooliganism, which is punishable with up to two years in prison, Alexeyeva's lawyer Anatoly Pchelintsev told The Moscow Times.

But Pchelintsev said Alexeyeva was satisfied with the suspended sentence because Pereverzev had apologized to her, saying he was drunk when he attacked her.

Alexeyeva also believes that the attack was "a signal that if she doesn't change her position, things will become worse for her," Pchelintsev said, referring to Alexeyeva's critical stance toward the authorities.

Alexeyeva did not apply for medical assistance after the attack, footage of which can be seen here on Ilya Yashin's Live Journal page.
