Russian Side Warming Up For Davis Cup

Russia's top tennis players will tune up for next week's Davis Cup final against Sweden with their own round-robin tournament Saturday at the Olympic Sports Center.


The $100,000 Russia Cup will feature Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Alexander Volkov, Andrei Chesnokov and Andrei Cherkasov in one-set singles matches, with the top two players advancing to a final.


Kafelnikov, the world's No. 11 player, heads the Russian team that takes on Sweden Dec. 2-4. Volkov and Cherkasov are also on the team, along with Andrei Olkovsky, who is now playing in the doubles world championships in Indonesia. Chesnokov is the team's reserve.


The Russia Cup starts at 2 P.M. Saturday, with a masters' doubles tournament beginning at 12 P.M. Tickets are available at the Olympic Sports Center box office (metro: Prospekt Mira).


The tournament is sponsored by MeshkomBank and Rosvoorozhenia, a state-run weapons company.
