Rugby Player Acquitted

LONDON -- The first player in English rugby history to be prosecuted for a death on the field has been found not guilty of manslaughter.

William Hardy, a 25-year-old electrician, was cleared of charges Tuesday that he "deliberately and unlawfully" caused the death of Seamus Lavelle during a match between West Drayton and Hendon 16 months ago.

Prosecutors alleged that Hardy had "deliberately and unlawfully" disabled Lavelle with an uppercut to the jaw during what was already becoming an ill-tempered match. As Lavelle fell backward, his head struck stony-hard ground. He died from traumatic head injuries two days later. Hardy did not deny hitting Lavelle, but said he did so in self-defense.
