Return to Abkhazia

MOSCOW () -- The breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia said Friday it was still committed to the return of some 300,000 Georgian refugees driven out of the area in fighting last year, despite its boycott of a latest round of talks on the problem.

The Abkhazian side stayed away from the talks in the southern Russian resort of Sochi on Friday, but in Moscow Anri Djergelia, a special representative of Abkhazia, told a news conference: "We think the return of refugees must take place, but in an organized way."

Djergelia said all those who returned to the separatist region, which effectively secured independence from Georgia by driving out government forces from its territory, would have to recognize Abkhazian law as the only one valid in the region.
