Rabbi Schneerson Dies

NEW YORK -- Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, the leader of the worldwide Lubavitch movement and a man revered by many of his followers as the long-awaited Messiah, has died and been buried in a simple ceremony in which thousands of his supporters were overcome by grief. The 92-year-old ultraorthodox rabbi died early Sunday three months after a stroke that had left him paralyzed. Amid a driving rain, tens of thousands of his supporters screamed with grief and surged forward to try to touch the plain pine coffin carrying his body as it was carried aloft from the group's headquarters in Brooklyn to a waiting vehicle.
