Protesters Face Trial

JAKARTA () -- Indonesia will bring 27 East Timorese and one immigrant from Sulawesi to court on various charges after a riot and pro-independence protest that rocked the territory earlier this month, a police official said.

Three people were killed in the ethnic riot in Baucau, 180 km (120 miles) east of Dili, on New Year's day.

Sugianto said 16 East Timorese youths would also face trial over a pro-independence protest in the capital Dili on Jan. 9 that coincided with a fifth round of U.N.-brokered talks between Indonesia and Portugal in Geneva.
