Protestants Invited

LONDON () -- British Prime Minister John Major on Thursday invited the political representatives of Northern Irish Protestant guerrillas to start exploratory talks Dec. 15.

Major made the announcement in parliament on the eve of exploratory talks between British officials and Sinn Fein, the political wing of the Irish Republican Army.

The IRA was invited to start exploratory talks three months after it launched a ceasefire on Sept. 1.

The loyalist Protestant groups, so-called because they are loyal to Britain's continued presence in Northern Ireland, announced a ceasefire six weeks later.
