Production Plummets

Russia's industrial output continued to plummet at record levels in February, falling by 24.1 percent against the same period for last year, Interfax reported Tuesday.


According to the State Statistics Committee, the total output for January and February fell by 23. 6 percent. The production of tractors fell by 80 percent as compared to the same period in 1993, and cars by 40 percent.


The engineering industry was worst affected, with its output falling 48 percent from the same period last year, and output in the chemical, paper, pulp and timber industry dropped by 30-5 percent. Light industry output was also badly affected, falling by 32 percent.


The committee said that factory stoppages had led to the decrease in output 4,280 factories suffered stoppages in February, up from 2,407 in October.
