Police Mutiny Quelled

DHAKA () -- A revolt by Bangladesh's auxiliary police force over pay and job security ended Monday with the surrender of a last group of nearly 700 mutineers in the southeastern Cox's Bazar district, local officials reported.

The mutiny was crushed elsewhere in Bangladesh on Sunday but it was only Monday morning that the Cox's Bazaar group freed officers they had taken hostage and gave themselves up.

The trouble began Thursday when thousands of auxiliary police demanded that their 45 taka ($1.10) daily wage would be increased and their jobs made permanent.
