Peace Troops Fired On

MOSCOW -- Russian troops sent to the troubled Georgian region of Abkhazia have come under fire at the start of a major peacekeeping operation, according to Itar-Tass. Attackers shot at the column of paratroops on Friday about 30 kilometers from the Abkhazian capital Sukhumi, but there were no casualties, the news agency said. Russian helicopters supporting the force were called in and fired three shells back, it said. Russia is sending about 3,000 peacekeeping troops to the area to police a peace deal brokered by Moscow between Georgian and Abkhazian separatist troops.
