Optimism for Rwanda

GOMA, Zaire -- The commander of the UN peacekeeping force in Rwanda said Wednesday he was optimistic a cease-fire could be brokered between rebel and government forces. Major General Romeo Dallaire, commander of the Kigali-based UN Assistance Mission in Rwanda, was speaking after talks with the chief of staff of the embattled government army. "We spoke about trying to achieve a cease-fire in Rwanda and the modalities of applying it," he told reporters after five hours of talks with Major General Augustine Bizimungu at Goma airport, a base for French troops mounting Operation Turquoise. "I am optimistic," said Dallaire.
