North Nomination

RICHMOND, Virginia -- National Republican figures are less than enthusiastic about Oliver North being the party's nominee for the U.S. Senate in Virginia. "I think from a clear political standpoint, our chances of winning that seat are diminished," Arizona Republican Senator John McCain said on CBS. Colonel North, whose notoriety grew out of the Iran-Contra arms scandal, won the nomination Saturday to face incumbent Democratic Senator Charles Robb in the November election. Senate minority leader Bob Dole of Kansas, also on CBS, was unwilling to endorse North, and said he had a meeting planned with Republican Marshall Coleman, a former attorney general for Virginia, who is threatening to run in the Senate race as an independent.
