Nets Nip Knicks, 85-83

NEW YORK -- Armon Gilliam scored 22 points, including a key jumper off a broken play with 20.5 seconds left, as the New Jersey Nets beat the New York Knicks 85-83 Tuesday night.


Patrick Ewing's jumper put the Knicks ahead 82-81 with 43 seconds remaining, but Gilliam's basket then gave the Nets the lead for good.


Ewing had a chance to tie it with seven seconds remaining, but he missed the second of two free throws.


Jazz 91, 76ers 88. In Philadelphia, Karl Malone scored 24 points and Utah rallied in the fourth quarter to win its ninth straight road game. Utah trailed 86-79 with 3:57 remaining before Jeff Hornacek's 3-pointer and Felton Spencer's free throw cut it to 86-83.


Magic 108, Trail Blazers 104. In Portland, Oregon, Shaquille O'Neal scored 30 points despite a slow start and a shaky finish as Orlando held off the Trail Blazers. The Magic broke away from a 65-65 tie with a 20-4 run in the third quarter to take control 85-69 on Horace Grant's layup with 2:21 left in the period. But the Blazers nearly caught up with a late rally.


SuperSonics 110, Clippers 79. In Tacoma, Washington, Shawn Kemp scored 23 points as Seattle won its 10th straight at the Tacoma Dome. Gary Payton added 22 and Kendall Gill 21 for the Sonics.


Lakers 108, Timberwolves 95. In Inglewood, California, Cedric Ceballos scored a career-high 50 points as the Lakers became the second NBA franchise to win 2,500 games.


Mavericks 110, Warriors 107. In Oakland, California, Jamal Mashburn scored 27 points, including consecutive 3-point baskets in the final 1:48, as Dallas dealt Golden State its 10th straight loss.


Kings 105, Bullets 102. In Sacramento, California, Mitch Richmond scored 28 points, including a 3-pointer and two free throws in the final 12 seconds, as Sacramento handed Washington its seventh loss in a row.


Hawks 115, Bucks 97. In Atlanta, Ken Norman scored 28 points and Atlanta broke out of a shooting slump. Norman hit 10 of 13 shots, including all four of his 3-point attempts.


Hornets 99, Pacers 95. In Charlotte, North Carolina, Alonzo Mourning and Hersey Hawkins each scored 22 points as Charlotte beat Indiana.
