WINCHESTER, England () -- A woman accused of murdering her daughter and nine other women went on trial Tuesday in one of Britain's most sensational serial killing cases.
Rosemary West's husband, Frederick West, had been charged with the same 10 deaths and two others, but he hanged himself in prison on New Year's Day.
The bodies of most of the victims were dug up at the Wests' home in Gloucester in western England. Judge Charles Mantell told the jury that the trial was likely to last up to eight weeks. Opening arguments by defense and prosecution are scheduled next week.
