A total of 106 flights were canceled at Moscow airports on Wednesday as the city was hit by the heaviest snowstorm since the beginning of winter, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Ninety-seven flights were canceled at Sheremetyevo Airport. Another nine flights were canceled at Domodedovo Airport, the news agency reported, citing online flight information provided by the airports.

More than 40 flights were delayed, RIA Novosti reported.

The snowstorm, which started in Moscow Tuesday night, covered the city with over 20 centimeters of snow, the Interfax news agency reported, citing Pyotr Biryukov, deputy mayor for housing and public works.

Russia's capital received 71 percent of the monthly precipitation norm in one night, according to data from Moscow Meteorological Bureau, Interfax reported.

A total of 15,500 snow removal vehicles and 60,000 workers have been mobilized to clean the streets.

Since the beginning of winter Moscow has already seen 242 centimeters of snow, which exceeds the climatic norm by 60 percent, according to Biryukov, Interfax reported.
