Mitterrand in Spotlight

PARIS () -- The French magazine Paris-Match broke a media taboo Thursday by publishing pictures of a girl it said was President Fran?ois Mitterrand's illegitimate daughter Mazarine.

The dark-haired 20-year-old literature student was photographed from a distance leaving a fashionable Paris restaurant with the president.

The French media traditionally draws a discreet veil over the private lives of public figures. But Paris-Match insisted Mitterrand's secret life with his mistress and with his daughter belonged in the public domain because the two women had lived in palaces of the republic and been transported and maintained at the taxpayers' expense.

Mitterrand, 78, in office since 1981, has two sons by his wife, Danielle.
