Major told Le Monde in an interview published Saturday that France appeared to have little alternative but to continue nuclear testing.
"When you have the responsibilities of a nuclear power and when your best scientific advisors tell you that more tests are needed, I am not sure that you have much choice," Major was quoted as saying.
