Magic Takes a New Seat

INGLEWOOD, California () -- Magic Johnson plans to have a lower profile at Los Angeles Laker games this year, but he won't disappear altogether.

"I've got too much money at stake to be less visible," the club's new minority owner and vice president said.

Johnson, who bought about 5 percent interest from Jerry Buss during the summer, said he plans to find new seats this season, somewhere other than on the baseline just a few feet away from the Laker bench.

"I want the team to get its own identity," said Johnson, who coached the team briefly and was critical of his players' attitude toward the traditional Laker style of fast-paced, "Showtime" basketball.
